It's hard to believe that zip codes didn't exist until 1963. The need for this new system reflected America's gradual change from an agricultural to an industrial society.

By 1963, about eighty percent (80%) of all mail sent in the United States was business related.

The "ZIP" in ZIP Code is abbreviated from Zoning Improvement Plan.

ZIP codes are numbered so that the first digit designates a group of U.S. states.

The next two digits together represent a region in that group (or perhaps a large city).

The fourth and fifth digits represent a group of delivery addresses within that region.

Starting in 1983, the United States Postal Service (USPS) began using an expanded ZIP code system called "ZIP+4." The numbers of this system are commonly called "plus-four codes", "add-on codes" or "add ons".

A ZIP+4 code uses the basic five-digit code plus four additional digits to identify a geographic segment within the five-digit area, like a city block, a group of apartments, or a row of post office boxes.
