The story of Christmas is based on the biblical accounts given in the Gospel of Matthew and the Gospel of Luke.
According to these accounts, Jesus was born to Mary, assisted by her husband Joseph, in the city of Bethlehem.
Christmas is a celebration of his birth, although historians conclude that Jesus was more likely born in September.
In modern times, Christmas is observed on December 25th in the western world. The holiday season is celebrated by bright, decorative displays, big family meals, and embracing the spirit of giving.
Though traditionally a Christian holiday, Christmas festivities are carried out in full force by Christians and non-Christians alike.
Throughout the world, people spend more money during the yuletide season than at any other time of the year. In the United States, Christmas is celebrated by 96% of the population.
Symbols of Christmas include angels, Santas, evergreen trees, Nativity scenes, gift boxes, bells, and holly. Also used are various symbols of the Christian faith, such as crosses and doves.
The colors most often associated with Christmas are red and green, often accompanied by shimmering white, silver, and gold.
The Christmas card was invented in 1843 by John Calcott Horsley, who lived Italy. He was hired by Sir Henry Cole to depict the desolate living conditions of the poor. The idea was to raise awareness and encourage people to help those in need.
Also in 1843, Charles Dickens wrote "A Christmas Carol."
The first artificial Christmas trees were made in Germany, of white goose feathers dyed green.
