when is presidents day, and why?

When is presidents day?

When Is Presidents Day? The President though you'd never ask.

Presidents Day is a United States holiday celebrated on the third Monday in February. It is considered by some to be a double celebration of the birthdays of two US Presidents - George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. They were born on February 22nd and February 12th, respectively.

In the late 60s and early 70s, there was a collective push to create more three day weekends for American workers. For this purpose, Congress proposed a measure known as the Uniform Monday Holiday Act

Since Then, these two Presidents' birthdays have been consolidated into a single holiday which would always fall on a Monday, despite the fact that Washington was born on a Friday, and Lincoln was born on a Sunday.

For a long time, Presidents Day was called Washington's Birthday, and fell on February 22nd, whatever day of the week that happened to be. However, by the mid 1980s, Washington's Birthday was known to most Americans as Presidents Day.

By the turn of the new millennium, more than half of America's states had officially changed the name of the holiday to President's Day.

Commercial retailers in the United States have taken full advantage of this holiday name change with countless "Presidents Day sales."

These days, Presidents Day is popularly recognized as a day to honor all of our American Presidents.
