In 2016, the overall age-adjusted suicide rate in the United States was 13.4 per 100,000 people, according to the Center for Disease Control.

Washington DC has a lower reported suicide rate than any U.S. state, with only 5.1 suicides per 100,000 people, according to known statistics.  

However, none of the above data accounts for unreported suicides.



Suicide Facts

1.  There were 40,600 suicides reported in the United States in 2012, 41,149 reported in 2013, and nearly 45,000 reported in 2016.

2.  Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in America.

3.  The overall U.S. suicide rate is believed to be 13.4 deaths per 100,000 people, as of 2016.

4.  More than half of all reported suicides in America are self-inflicted gunshot wounds.

5.  In 2013, the highest suicide demographic by age group in America was 19.1 deaths per 100,000 people between the ages of 45 and 64.

6.  The suicide rate in America is about four times higher among men than among women.

7.  Only 1 out of every 25 suicide attempts is successful.  

8.  On average, 123 Americans commit suicide each day. Based on the above statistic, that means that on average, more than 3,000 Americans attempt suicide each day.

Suicide is alarmingly common among Native American youth.  

According to one study, roughly 25 percent of youth suicides in America are Native American youth.

This is shocking when you consider that Native Americans make up less the one precent of America's population.


Common problems that can cause depression leading to suicide include

  • pre-existing mental illness
  • domestic violence
  • child abuse
  • chronic poverty 
  • substance abuse 

or any combination of the above.
