The warm mineral springs of Bath flow at a constant temperature of 74°F from the base of Warm Springs Ridge. Visitors fill their jugs at Lord Fairfax's public tap, and wade in the ancient stone pools.
Berkeley Springs is also famous for its many art galleries, as this little town of less than 700 people is home to dozens of professional artists.
Popular activities at Berkeley Springs include, golf, hiking, swimming, live music and theater. The town also hosts quite a few annual events such as the Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting toward the end of February, the Apple Butter Festival in early October, and a mid-April food festival called Uniquely West Virginia.
Historically, the town was first noted as "Medicine Springs" in 1747, on a map drawn by Thomas Jefferson's father.
The springs and their rumored medicinal effects have attracted countless Native American and European visitors to the area for hundreds of years. George Washington, at age 16, made several trips there with his brother, who was ill and hoped the springs would cure him.
In 2006, Berkeley Springs was named a West Virginia Certified Historic Preservation Community.
