Kentucky, more properly known as "The Commonwealth of Kentucky," is one of only four U.S. states established as a commonwealth (the other three are Massachusetts, Pennsylvania and Virginia). 

"Commonwealth" is an obsolete English term referring to a government based on the common consent of the people. Today, a state and a commonwealth are considered one and the same thing.

According to historical records, Kentucky was inhabited by Native Americans in prehistoric days, but by the time European settlers arrived in the mid-18th century, there were no "major" Native American settlements in the region. The land was supposedly only being used as hunting grounds by Shawnees from the north and Cherokees from the south. However, it seems likely that there were smaller tribes occupying the land of what is now known as Kentucky.
