Smart States

Fairly recently, a company called Morgan Quitno developed the Smartest State Award.

Calculations for the award were based on factors like standardized test grades and the number of libraries per square mile in each state.

Also playing a major role is the student-teacher ratio. The fewer students per teacher, the better.

The state of Vermont (ranking first on this list) has an average student-teacher ratio of less than 11 to 1.

In Arizona (ranking last) the average pupil-teacher ratio exceeds 20 to 1.

The following list shows how your state measures up compared to other U.S. states, in terms of the quality of public education.

Following that is a list of average IQ scores by state, based on a calculation of SAT scores, according to various statistical websites. Try not to take it personally.
