Easy Casserole Recipes and Authentic Regional Cuisine

Many Easy Casserole Recipes come from the state of Indiana.  Some of these recipes have been passed down through generations.  

Traditional midwestern cuisine can be compared to a Thanksgiving dinner, featuring wild caught game and plenty of hardy vegetables.  

The flavors and styles of Indiana cuisine draws on influences of Native American culture, as well as on the culinary input of British, Irish, and German Immigrants.  

Today's Indiana cuisine is further influenced by spices and flavors found in Mexico and India.    

These flavors are reflected in Indiana's many traditional Casserole Recipes.  

Aside from casseroles, two dishes popular in the Indianapolis area are the Sugar Cream Pie and the Pork Tenderloin Sandwich.


Here's a sweet & easy casserole recipe anyone can try.  


Glazed Sweet Potato Apple Casserole

INGREDIENTS:

  • 4 medium sweet potatoes
  • 2 large apples
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 1/3 cup molasses
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup pecans


DIRECTIONS:

  1. Preheat oven to 350℉.
  2. Boil sweet potatoes until tender but still firm and allow them to cool.
  3. Peel and slice the sweet potatoes, and place in a shallow baking dish.
  4. Core and slice the apples, then sprinkle salt and lemon juice over them.
  5. In a skillet, bring butter to a slow sizzle and toss apple slices around in the pan until slightly soft.
  6. Arrange apples with the sweet potatoes.
  7. Add molasses to butter remaining in pan and bring to a boil.
  8. Pour over apples and sweet potatoes, coating well.
  9. Sprinkle brown sugar and pecans on top.
  10. Bake for 30 minutes or until brown and bubbly on top.
