Virginia is bordered by Maryland and Washington DC to the north and east, Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean to the east, North Carolina and Tennessee to the south, Kentucky to the west, and West Virginia to the north and west.

Although Virginia ranks only 35th in total land area (42,771 square miles), it has the 12th largest population of the 50 U.S. states, with over 7.7 million year round residents. Virginia Beach is the state's largest city, and Richmond is the state capital.

Virginia's Historic Triangle, which includes Jamestown, Yorktown and the living museum of Colonial Williamsburg, is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world.

Other popular Virginia landmarks include the High Street shopping district in Portsmouth, the Luray Caverns, the Blue Ridge Mountains, Virginia Beach and of course the trail found on any Appalachian Trail Map.
